Why Cloth Diapers?

Why on Earth would someone choose to use cloth diapers when disposables seem so much more convenient? I'm going to try to answer that question for you.

There are 3 main reasons that many families are choosing to go with cloth for their babies. They are:

  1. Cost
  2. Environmental Considerations
  3. Health

Let's talk about the cost factor. In the United States alone, parents spend about 7 billion dollars a year on disposable diapers. To diaper one child from birth to potty learning, it costs roughly $2500.00 for disposables. With cloth diapers, you can save an incredible amount of money. Depending on the system of diapers that you use, you could spend as little as $100.00 from birth to potty learning, and then use those diapers on your next child as well!
Parents are also choosing cloth over "sposies" because of the environmental impact. One disposable diaper takes between 250-500 years to decompose, and Americans are using about 24.7 billion disposables a year. Of course, almost all of those diapers end up in a landfill. I don't even want to do the math.

Health concerns are yet another reason that many parents are going old-school with their diapers (of course, if you look at the new modernized cloth diapers you will realize there's really nothing old-school about them). Disposable diapers are incredibly absorbent, but that's because they're loaded with all kinds of chemicals and absorbent gels. (I know, not really technical but bear with me while I figure out how to link articles here!) Dioxin is one of the chemicals in disposable diapers, and it has been banned in several countries and is listed by the EPA as toxic and carcinogenic.

That's a tiny bit of information about why you'll be seeing more babies in cloth. Let's not forget to mention the cuteness factor! Cloth diapers are absolutely adorable, and it's a fashion statement you can feel good about.
